Birth of a Boomtown
The Village at Longboat Landing. Fort McMurray’s first Master-Planned community.
With a history as rich as the oil sands that fuel its economy, Fort McMurray is a Northern Alberta beacon.
The area’s aboriginal inhabitants first reported the oil sands as far back as 1778, but scientific exploration here did not begin until 1882. Construction of the Great Canadian Oil Sands Ltd. (Suncor) facility began in 1960, and seven years later, extraction commenced. Fort McMurray has never looked back.
